An educational, nutritional and emotional support
Providing a free preschool program for low income three, four and five year olds, the Gallimore Learning Center provides educational, nutritional and emotional support in a Christian atmosphere. We strive to impart the social and academic skills necessary for success in the public school system. Ultimately, these students are able to build upon their in-school successes, enter the work force competitively, and escape from the cycle of poverty.
At the Gallimore Learning Center, children are given a chance to explore the areas of music, science, art, and constructive play while developing their visual, motor, and pre-reading skills. Recognizing that a positive home environment is also essential for students to succeed, Gallimore’s staff works with the students’ families by encouraging self-reliance and serving as a resource in locating essential services. Through daily interaction with the parents, Gallimore’s staff encourages them to enter the work force or to pursue a GED or other educational opportunities.
The Gallimore Learning Center takes its name from the historic Gallimore School, the century-old, two-room schoolhouse in which the center operates. The school originally was built to serve the families of workers in Henrico County’s coal mines, and it has been an important symbol of educational opportunity since that time. In fact, the grandparents of some recent Gallimore students still remember the days when students arrived at the school on horseback!
